This book went everywhere with me during the first difficult months of recovery. Told without the usual mawkish sentimentality associated with much recovery literature, the impact of the author's story is powerful and shattering - and ultimately redemptive. A very important book.

Absolutely superb autobiographical account of McCullys recovery from alcohol addiction. McCully, a professor of English, writer and fisherman takes us on a journey through the first 2 years of recovery. The books strength is in the intimacy with which he tells his story. Starting out in rehab and surveying the wreckage of his life, McCully tells how he slowly rebuilds his life. A great companion read for anyone in early recovery or for any friend, partner, or counsellor who wishes to know what the recovery process actually feels like. McCully also reflects, in hindsight, about his own addictive process and how it overcame him with bits of factual input about alcoholism throughout. A lovely storyteller, a must for the bookshelf of anyone who likes good writing, ascerbic, intricate, poignant and like all good stories - a happy end. Checking McCullys website, I find he is now, as of Aug 2008, 7 years sober, and fishing again!
