This film was nothing like how i expected it to be. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was filmed and it's classic feel, which is aided by the fim starting in black and white. It's set in the 1950's and the soundtrack definitly reflects the beat generation. The story is about a guy called Neal (played by Thomas Jane) who leaves his girlfriend after she commits suicide as he thinks she is dying. Neal meets up with an old friend Harry (The very lovely Keanu Reeves) to play pool, drink and fool around with young girls. You see a different character played by Keanu, which is quite refreshing from his latest superhero role as Neo in the Matrix trilogies. I found this film interesting, and quite different in its style. Definitly one to try!

Based on the Beat Generation characters of Neal Cassady, Alan Ginsberg etc.
It stars Thomas Jane as Cassady and recent Academy Award winner, Adrien Brody, as Ginsberg. Keanu Reeves played one of Cassady's buddies. Claire Forlani, Gretchen Moll and John Doe also appear.

The movie is based on Cassady's famous letter to Kerouac (Cassady is given a writing credit in the movie) and it's all about Cassady's life in the '40s.

I really enjoyed the movie myself. Friends of mine, who aren't into the literary/Kerouac thing and just watched it AS A MOVIE, thought it was really good too. I thought Jane pulled Cassady off pretty well, kind of "aw-shucks" but masculine and intelligent.

I'm surprised it hasn't had larger exposure & distribution. If the film is four star, the opening sequence (while the title and opening credits are being rolled) where 'Neal'
cavorts around his kitchen, (while dressing to meet Carolyn, - and it IS Neal!) is five star.

This is an interseting true story about how a man(thomas jane) copes with life and the desisions he makes after his girlfreind attempts suicide. Thinking she is dying, he leaves her at the hospital and goes back to shooting pool, picking up girls and boozing with his friend harry (keanu reeves). then, by meeting a freind from the past, his world is thrown into confusion and he questions where his life is heading. this film has a good story, made more interesting by the fact that it is based on a true story. there are outstaning performances given by jane and reeves and ut's fast pace and comic dialogue make it a must see. thumbs up for this movie.

this is a good film based on a letter that neal cassady wrote to jack kerouac. it involves neal's relationships, trials and tribulations, and is well worth watching if you are interested in the beat generation.
