I've been in a relationship for almost two years with the most wonderful person. The caveat- he is seven years older than me and he is an established dentist, while I am just starting medical school. For me I have no problems with the relationship, and we both want to get married. Even his parents approve. The crazy thing is our families have actually known each other for many years, but my parents disapprove because of the age and profession difference. Many of my friends would say, "just move out and get married", but in my culture that is incredibly disrespectful and marriages are known to suffer without parental support. Their reason for disapproving is totally irrational and my parents are being really petty. I'm also shy and bad with confrontation so it's been really hard to talk to my parents about this. They say if I get married, I'll lose my relationship with them. What do I do?
its somewhat difficult to answer because of the culture you are in. if you are really required to get parental support, and feel that you cannot possibly go ahead without it, then that is what you must do. if you address your confidence issues, you may be able to talk to your parents better and talk them round.
Wow! you are in a pickle. Sounds like your parents got some REAL CONTROL ISSUES.
I say, be with the one you love. If your parents love you, as I know they do, they will come around. Get Married. Does not sound like you will shack up.
Sub-cultures should conform to the Dominant culture and the Dominant culture supports marriage to a professional man 7 years your senior.
Medical school is pressure enough, shame on your parents-show them this post and let others do the talking for you...Hope this help.
Good Luck Doctoral Candidate
Hi there, I understand the situation you're in. It is indeed hard to be in a relationship without parents approval. About the marriage, in my opinion, don't take the risk by going with it, there will be much conflicts and complications in the future. If you cant confront alone, what about both of you have a talk with your parents and make them understand? Because children's happiness should be parents' happiness as well right? I hope everything is gonna be ok. Both family and relationship are important, dont risk any of them
