So im 16 and I smoke once in a while! My parents dont know and they dont approve of it. I told my brother who is 21 that I did it like a month ago. Yesterday I went out with him and some friends and I smoked a cigarette. He saw me. todayat lunch he randomly blurts out to my parents that I was smoking yesterday! My parentsarent talking to me and they have grounded me! I feel betrayed by him becasuse when he was in highschool he smoked weed and i never told my parents. I feel like im in an experimenting stage of my life and that he shouldve talked to me instead of my parents! I told him how i felt and he believes that he did nothing wrong! What should i do?

Dear Natilustpolo, I totally understand you. I also hate to be betrayed. Even more so for someone so close as your own brother. I am not going to run into cliches here as in " maybe he was just looking after you, he was concerned about your health, etc." No. It was awful what he did, and if you ask me, if I was a parent, I would be more cross with him for betraying you than with you for smoking. As you well said, you are in an experimental phase of your life, although you have to be careful with what you try, your brother should have been supportive and talked to you first. Him, on the other hand is showing a flaw in his character. But it also makes me think, perhaps, he might be a bit jealous of you, and just wanted to show your parents: " Hey, look, she is not perfect! She was smoking behind your back! " . I have an older sister and I know she can be very jealous of me from time to time. You seem to be a very well centred person, and I am sure you will find a way of dealing with situation. You look so much mature than your brother, and he may also be jealous of that also. Maybe state it clear to your brother that you cannot trust him as you did before after what he did, and you hope you can rebuild your trust but that will depend on his behaviours and attitudes from now on. I hope it helps.

It's too bad that your brother tattle-taled on you. But I do think he did that because he thinks they can stop you - and he did not know how to do that. Smoking is very addictive. There is not ONE health benefit. Research says that teenage smoking is linked to how teens cope with depression. Are you depressed, anxious? BTW - you should see what it does to the face skin and gums, teeth and lungs. It's really sad to see my friends who started smoking in their teens and they are now in their 50 - 60's. - cancer, COPD, bad wrinkles and diabetes, all things related to smoking.
