Acne skincare: tips for clearing up your breakout

Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, acne breakouts always seem to occur at the worst possible time. Maybe you have an important presentation coming up, or need to get your picture taken, or just want to be able to go out on the weekend without getting embarrassed about your skin. Whatever the case, there are two things you need to figure out: 1.) what’s causing this breakout? and 2.) what can I do about it?

By figuring out what type of acne you have, you can determine the cause as well as the treatment that’s going to be most effective for your skin. In order to help you do that, the innovative skincare specialists at Advanced Dermatology have put together a helpful guide. Here are some of the different types of acne you might encounter along with recommendations for treatment.

Blackheads are a mild form of acne and may make it look as if you have tiny black pinpoints in the pores of your face. These blackheads occur because your skin produces oil and other gland secretions, which can create a "plug" in your open pores. For mild blackheads, a topical or oral medication prescribed by your dermatologist may be enough. In more severe cases, you might try laser treatment or in-office treatment.

Adult rosacea is characterized by red, irritated skin and might also be accompanied by pimples. This type of acne occurs because the face’s blood vessels are overreacting to bacteria, and it is most common in people who have genetically sensitive skin. The best treatment for this type is either a topical/oral prescription or light/laser therapy.

Whiteheads look like white bumps and occur when oil gets stuck in the glands underneath your skin and does not break through the surface. Treatment options include in-office procedures such as a chemical peel, laser therapy, or a topical/oral prescription.

Adult acne typically occurs in people 25 and older due to changes in hormone levels and is more common in women than men. This type of acne can also be triggered by stress, a dry environment, or sensitive skin. Because this kind of breakout can be painful and has the potential to scar, you should talk to your dermatologist about whether to use a topical or oral medication, laser treatment, hormone therapy, or another in-office procedure.

Cystic acne results in large, deep pimples that may look like “lumps” and is caused by multiple glands fusing together with deep inflammation. This is another form of acne that can be painful and leave scarring, and any of the same treatment methods mentioned for adult acne may be appropriate. Your dermatologist will be able to recommend the best treatment for your particular case.
