How much space to give a person

My boyfriend has gotten mad at me for giving him the space he asked for. He told me he did not want to talk to me so I told him I would give him space and asked him to let me know when he wanted to talk to me again. After 4 days I asked him if we could talk and he told me it didn't seem like I wanted to. He got upset with me after I tried to explain I was only trying to respect his need for space. We live together so I have been giving him as much space as possible while still letting him know I care by telling him I love him before I go to bed and kissing him before I leave for work in the morning. What do I do?
