Girl gave me number at work

So I'm kinda old, early 40s. Anyway I work in a hospital. There is a young girl, early 20s, works in a different dept in an entry level position while attending college. We have worked together about a year but only actually see each other at work 1 day every other week. We have been friendly, never flirty or anything.she has a boyfriend. Anyways today at the end of her shift she informs me that today is her last day. She says

I'm going to wager that if you're early 40s, she's early 20s, she thinks of you more as a father figure than as a potential date. She might have really loved working with you and want to stay in touch (probably platonically), or think you were an awesome mentor or whatever. But it's highly unlikely she thinks of you *that* way. (I say this having been a girl in her early 20s. It's pretty common that any even vague degree of friendliness you show towards men in their late 30s+ is interpreted as you wanting to sleep with them...when the truth is, it's really rare to want to sleep with someone old enough to have fathered you.)

I disagree @silviagirl - it happens a lot to me. Young girls flirt and do find older men attractive. However, i am not under any illusions. When this has happened to me I always know deep down they wouldnt go all the way. They just want the attention and thrill

I think that the older men (of which I'm guessing you're one of?) *think* they're flirting. (Just like the barista at Starbucks is flirting...*eye roll*) And while it's not impossible, it's not especially likely, either. (And they don't find old men as attractive as old men think they do. Just like most dudes who are 48 don't find 68 year old women to be super foxy. There may be the rare one who *is*, but generally people aren't looking for romance with someone 2 decades their senior.)

Yes in normal life maybe but in a work enviroment it is magnified. Imagine an office with 8-10 people. One hot young girl mid 20s...one guy early 40s who's looked after himself & is charming. They are going to get along. As far as the work they goes they are a good match. Will probably not have blinked twice on the street but its different seeing someone for 8 hours a day

Uh huh... Because that happens all the time in work environments with 40 something men and 60 something women... He might not have looked at that woman in accounting who talks about her grandkids all the time on the street, but in a work environment... Again, it's *possible* (esp. if the guy looks like George Clooney or the woman looks like Helen Mirren)...but most old guys don't. (Also, note that women practically never mention they have boyfriends if they want to hit on someone. It's far more likely that they'll make up boyfriends to make it very clear that all they want to be is friends. I've done it. Most women have.)
