Should I get another cat?

I have a 3-year-old male cat, and I'm considering getting him a companion. I'm away from the house a lot because of my job, and he doesn't like being alone. When I am home, I give him love and attention, but lately he's become bored and scratching up the furniture. It was suggested by some friends of mine that I should get another cat, but when I did that, the two didn't get along. (Both males, around the same age.) I'm considering getting a female kitten. What would you advise?

Get him a scratching post, and find a spray that you can use on furniture to deter him from scratching

It’s tricky. I work in an animal shelter and what you have said is correct. It can be difficult to introduce 2 new cats as they get older but I have done it. I agree it would be nice for your cat to have a companion.

Trying a female next is a logical move. However, I wouldn't personally choose a KITTEN. If the existing cat doesn't like the fact of her or they don't get on, you've created a daily, all-day battle situation between an adult animal and a baby one (er.....!!!). Might it be a good idea to read up on the web about how to solve this problem, or try asking on a forum specifically for cat/pet lovers?
