How can I make it up to my coworkers and boss?

So basically I feel like I majorly screwed over everyone I work with (including my boss) and I need advice on how I can make it up to them or even if I should just leave so they can find better. My father in law passed away after a long stay in the hospital and because of this, I missed around 4 days of work in a row (when it happened) and I worked a few (under 5) half days leading up to it to run to the hospital/support my husband. I was in a lot of communication during these times, when I missed all those days in a row I came back the day they wanted me to and when I took 1/2 days I asked before I left HOWEVER it was usually the DAY OF I would ask not the week before because I didn’t know when I would need these days unfortunately. I came back to work finally after all that and my coworkers and boss were very unhappy with me to say the least. I had a long talk with my boss and he informed me of the stress and extra work that everyone else had to deal with in the office while I was gone. He also has very strict rules on my attendance going forward and wants me to keep a log of my daily tasks. At first I was angry, but after talking to some others and thinking on it, I truly do see how I was in the wrong here. I would never miss that much work if it weren’t for the circumstances, and even with those circumstances I feel like I took advantage of them. I do not have PTO so these were all unpaid time off that I didn’t give the right amount of notice for, plus I took too many days off. I feel like I should have came back to the office earlier than they wanted me to, I put them in a tough spot in various ways. It’s been weeks since this incident and my coworkers are still very upset with me and my boss is still very strict with my time/what I do in a day. So basically I’m asking for advice on how I can prove to them that I will not take advantage of them again and that they can rely on me to be here every day I’m supposed to be. So far I’ve been here daily and stayed late almost all the days. I have been doing all tasks that I have been asked to do as well. This was originally going to be the end of the post, but over the weekend I fell down half a flight of stairs and hurt my ankle somewhat bad and really hurt my hand (specifically my thumb) nothing is broken, my ankle and leg are bruised but not swollen and my thumb is bruised and swollen but not broken. I am able to move mostly comfortably if I go kind of slow, and I can’t really call off work so I went in today. It is taking me significantly longer to do tasks today (a good portion of my job is physical), and my coworkers and boss are noticing and not directly saying they’re irritated but are dropping hints. For example: I finished a task and reported back, one of my coworkers made a comment about how it took a lot longer than it usually takes me. I apologized and explained that I fell down the steps over the weekend and am a little bruised up from it, so I’m running a little slow but doing my absolute best. She replied: “We are all tired from the weekend, it’s a Monday. But we all still have work to do and can’t make excuses, it needs to be done” I agreed and said I definitely wasn’t trying to make an excuse and still plan on getting all my work done. I guess my question here is how do I go about navigating this new problem added on top of my old one? They’re already very dissatisfied with my productivity when I’m not injured, so I feel like it’s going to turn into something even worse now. I have been staying late to get stuff done and will continue to this week as well because of my slow in efficiency. I just feel like I keep trying to get on good terms with my coworkers and I just can’t. I don’t want to lose this job.

Hi IHAVENOIDEAWHATTODO, First of all, take a big hug from me to calm you down and feel relaxed. I would suggest you take a few deep breaths before reading on. I completely understand how confused and overwhelmed you must be feeling. You are thinking about making things right and willing to put efforts shows your true commitment to the work. Kudos on that! Firstly, the situation you described (taking care of your father-in-law /family) where you have to balance your work and family is not uncommon and almost everybody who is working has to go through such situation sooner or later . It is likely that your coworkers must have gone through the same which they have easily forgotten. "I was in a lot of communication during these times, when I missed all those days in a row I came back the day they wanted me to ..." If you were in a constant clear communication with your boss and coworkers during your absence, then you have done your part. If not, that's a mistake which you have to admit, learn from it and move on. If you haven't already, sincerely apologize for the mistake. If you feel like boss and coworkers are still unhappy about your performance, I would suggest you to have a meeting with them may be individually and talk to them sincerely and politely about what you feel. You can ask them about their clear expectations from you. Try asking for some time / help in order to improve. This will help you to focus on things that are lacking in you from their point of view. Then take sincere efforts to improve and show your best which will boost your confidence as well as theirs. It is unfortunate that you met with an accident on top of this. However, these things happen and don't read too much into it. You are lucky that nothing is broken and it is just a bruise which will heal on its own given a time. In both your situations, 'time' will play important part.(healing your bruise as well as your relation with coworkers). My suggestion would be-- go create more happy memories in the office so everyone including you will forget the past and move on. (Buy coffee or snacks for everyone just to create positive environment, ignore if they talk nasty behind your back). In my humble opinion --"Work should be taken seriously but not the coworkers". Keep your commitment to the work, everything else will fall into place sooner or later. Please do not think about changing the jobs because of this mere incidence. Please take care of yourself and keep a good communication in the office, everything will be fine. Good Luck!! :)
