Asked him where he saw "us" in a year

My boyfriend and I have been dating now for about 8 months. Everything has been absolutely great! We share the same views on family, religion, values, marriage etc. I have a 2 year old daughter whom he adores. Although I have a daughter, I have never been married, but her father and I did live together for 5 years. My boyfriend has no kids and has never been married, but also had an ex whom he lived with for 5 years. We are not living together and I have no plans of doing so again until I am married. So anyway I asked him last night where he saw us in a year. I could tell that I caught him of guard and now I am feeling a little foolish for asking. He has a good job right now and is almost done with school. He has had several better job offers in his field and is thinking about buying a house. He has been talking about all of this alot! The past couple months he has also made several comments that allude to him having plans of marrying me and we have discussed marriage in general but he has never said anything outright about his plans. So, naturally, with all this in mind, I am curious to know what he sees for us in the future. His reply was that weddings are expensive and he would want a really small simple Justice of the Peace wedding (which I totally agree with) and then talked about how expensive engagement rings are.
