Curious & a little bit nervous . . . Someone with Italian background would be great. :)

Hi to all... :) ... as the title says, I'm a little bit curious and nervous at the same time. The reason is, I saw a conversation between my boyfriend (of 2 years) and his ex girlfriend the other day and just happened to read a small part of it. In the short bit that I read, she was asking why my boyfriend does not say TVB (Ti voglio bene) back to her when she says it and that she likes to hear it from him and friends. /: ... My boyfriend then said TVB tanto (a lot) and the girl sent a kissy smiley with a heart... Mind you, these two haven't been together since 2007/2008 probably even 2006. They've known each other for a very, very long time and still keep contact with each other. As in almost every single day the two of them chat. He still has old pictures of her when they were together but it's hidden away in a box in his closet and also saved in his USB External Storage. Every now and then they send current pictures of themselves to one another... Now, I've Googled the term TVB and they mean “I love you” or, literally, “I wish you good things.” Italians often say “ti voglio bene” to friends, parents and other relatives but it is used between lovers as well. Some say that it expresses a philosophical joining of souls. So this is where I am a little curious and maybe a little nervous. I do not know if either of them mean it in a platonic way or something more deeper than friendship... :( ... Honestly I do not know much about the girl aside that she still lives in Italy, has hip problems and she was my boyfriend's ex ... I do not even know if she knows that he is taken ... I asked him and he said that he told her before but I kind of doubt that ...
