When to know if it will ever work out

What if you've been trying your best and it never gets better? My situation is where i have a friend thats been dating this girl for 5 months and well the same problem kind of pops up. and then they talk he hopes something will change but it never does. Reply for more info on the situation. Would like advise for my friend.
