Unrequited love?

Default profile image
I have recently send somebody on a messaging site (FaceBook) that I love them. About 4 days afterwards they give me a handwritten letter in person (we go to the same college) acknowledging the letter, yet saying they are uninterested in me and said that they were okay with being friends. Yet, as they were giving me the letter I noticed that they were acting rather bashful and secretive about it, even asking me to throw the letter away once I was finished reading it. I gave them a handwritten letter on the same day (today, actually) telling how I felt about it. Basically how it would hurt me if I was just friends with them, I then asked them if they could give me a letter if they really cared for my well-being and if they would be hurt if I left them and forgot about them. Of course they give a letter back, but it basically emphasizes what the first said, yet to go up to them in person to say if they were okay with being friends and also to rip it up after reading it. I don't know, but I felt that they like (love?) me, but they were just holding it back, it really hurts me, but I don't know what to do. Should I go up to them and say that I'm okay with just being friends or the same just saying that being friends would hurt me. Or should I ignore the situation all together? I really love the person and I would feel horrible if I just left them and they still like (love?) me. Or should I just ask the person if they really like me, deep down. Not in notes or anything like that. Is this someone that I could be with and should be with?
