The smart money is on the house. You can live in a house while you're buying/investing in it, and it's the same $1,000 or more a month you'd be putting into an apartment. So, you're getting a guaranteed return on your investment every money. You can't live in gold or a stock, so you're going to pay another $1,000 or more a month to rent an apartment. The gold or stock might go up, or it might go down, or stay the same, you don't know. With the house, you know you've made $1,000 every month, plus the bonus of, you've gotten a place to live. Plus, you'll know one day you will own it, and you will have no rent or mortgage payment for the rest of your life, and can spend that $1,000 or more on anything you want, or save it. I live in a house right now that's been paid for for 10 or 12 years. The hard part is getting enough money for the down payment, what is it now, $5,000 or $10,000, now, I don't know. The easy part is paying the same monthly fee that you would pay anyway on rent. I wouldn't buy too big of a house, and can barely make the payments. With stocks, etc., when do you sell? When its doubled your money, when it might have tripled if you had waited a year or two? What if it drops to half of what you bought it for, do you sell? You never know. Get the house first, then you can talk pie in the sky. Although I hope not.
