Might be getting fired

Hello fellow People I need help, So, I might be getting fired Monday. I worked at this hardware store since I was 16 (I'm 22 now). It's been almost 6 years. I am never late, and honestly I am a pretty good worker in my opinion. Well yesterday I made a mistake. Someone was paying their credit card off that was 2,000+ (he handed me several 100's and 50's) I counted it 3 times, and it seemed correct. Well I guess it wasn't, I guess it was half of what I counted, but for some odd reason in my head it was correct and I don't know why. Either way my drawer was $1000 off yesterday. I got a call this morning by the general manager who told me to come in. He was nice about it, and said he will do what he can to fix it but no promises. I really won't know until Monday if I can keep my job or not I guess. Thankfully, I do have a resume, and cover letter ready. I need to get in contact with a couple people for references though. I'm just really REALLY worried about getting fired. It has been awhile since I've had an interview, this was my first job and I stuck with it for 6 years. To be honest the reason I have a resume and cover letter ready was because I was miserable and wanted a new job - I tried to find one last year. So maybe in the grand scheme of things this is pushing my in the right direction. This year has been extremely hard for me. I lost my dad very suddenly to a car accident in March and now it looks like I will be loosing my job too that I've had for 6 years. I think I am spiraling into a depression, and am having bad anxiety at the very least. I was wondering what I can do to help my mental health, and what is the best thing I should do after getting fired? If this were to blow over Monday and things get figured out, I think I will be looking for a new job anyway, it is time. I'm not happy, and I really need to focus on my mental health. I'm in all honesty not doing too well.

Can you offer to repay the company back in installments every pay check to cover the loss? Good employes are hard to find and 6 years should mean something. It was a mistake, not a thief.

The $1,000 loss stinks. Especially if the customer realized it and didn't come forward. It was a mistake and it never feels good to make one like that, but like you said, it's a timely event as you are looking for new work anyway. It might feel good to offer to pay it back in installments, as previously suggested, but in reality they probably won't accept the offer since they have insurance for reasons like this. Plus, security footage can probably verify that you did not pocket the money. Onto the bigger issue - being happy. The first step will be forgiving yourself. When I was 16 I was a bank teller and cashed a fake check for $944. I was let go that day. It was mortifying! And after a while it didn't matter. Mistakes happen, it wasn't my first and it definitely wasn't my last! The point is - I bet you'll never make that mistake again, right? Learn from it. Forgive yourself. Move on. If your general manager knows you and knows it was an honest mistake, if they let you go you should be able to qualify for unemployment. Take advantage of it to hold you over. As for you wanting a new job - use this as an opportunity to go after something you'll really love and enjoy. Very sorry to read about losing your father suddenly.
