You understand what an alcoholic is about having experienced it first hand with your Mum. While you may recognise the symptoms, your BF can't, because he's an addict. If he needs alcohol to help him sleep and to handle his work stress, then he has a major problem with it. He needs to realise that he has a disease but he further has to get on the same rocky road that your Mum's on and that's called recovery. He has to do this himself and you can't help him and your arguments are the result of your concern for him and of you trying to assist him. The one hard fact that you need to understand is that alcoholism hurts and damages those closet to the person suffering from it and this is what you are experiencing now. I'm sorry, but think back to your Mum and the things you may have experienced then. Importantly, you have 3 children and you need to consider their well being. Your BF may be functioning now but he has to deal with his issue himself and that alone could take years to achieve.
