I am trying to get hold of my family's history, and I don't know where to start looking. I live outside the UK, but need some good internet resources if I'm going to be doing this from a distance. Can anyone recommend any good websites so that I can make a start on this? I don't want it to cost me a lot, but am prepared to pay for good, reliable information.

Hi Danny, I have used http://www.peoplefinders.co.uk before, but you may find that you need to look at a website like http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk - this has got all sorts of things on it from census data to wills and records about migration. There is a fee, but only when you find what you are looking for - might be worth a go.
