Going on 6 years

Me and my boyfriend (M) have been going out for Whats now going on 6years, given that the last year was a long distance relationship seeing how he moved to CA 1 year before me from FL. We've had our ups and downs been stayed together through it all he says he wants to be with me forever, we talk about what it'll be like to have children together and we've even shared visions of what our wedding would look like. but every time I try to get serious with the conversation like actually planning to get engaged or even a time frame of the wedding he shuts down and doesn't want to talk about it he says things like "Thats not something you can plan" or even worse "I don't know". My question is am I just waiting for something that'll never happen? or Am I just being impatience?

He isn't in school & will be 26yo this Dec. I did join him it just took a yr for family illness. we both live and work here now & we aren't struggling so i know funds arent an issue. the other thing is when i first moved here i found out while i wasnt around he has made plans to meet a girl but it never happened and i have reason to believe he had a tinder account. all of which i forgave him for because i myself am no angel and have made mistakes and been forgiven in the past.
