I really don't know what to do

I've been going to an orchestra for 2 years now. I was in second desk but i should have moved up to first desk. My friend joined and she's not the same standard as me yet she sits there. I feel that I should be in first desk because not only am I more experienced but I'm also older. The leader of the section said I should sit next to her i tried but my friend forced her way there. I really don't know what to do. There's a concert coming up and my parents won't be happy because I'm not in the front and deep down I know I deserve to be there. We were discussing it and my friend basically said she was going in the front and I didn't know what to say so I said We'd discuss it another time. It makes me feel really useless because i feel like I'm not getting anywhere. This may seem like a stupid problem but it really is bothering me. I would appreciate some advice to help me resolve it. Thanks xx

Hi, no problem is stupid, that's the first thing. Second, if you feel that you really deserve that spot, and that you have really worked hard for it, you need to gather the courage and talk to your friend. I understand how hard it can be to confront people, but you should not allow someone to get in the way of your greatness. I played in a symphonic band for a while and I get the whole seating arrangements, the 1st and 2nd chair thing, it is important. Don't be afraid to confront your friend. Tell her how this situation makes you feel. Tell her exactly what you wrote up there. If she still chooses to not budge then you need to bring someone else into the matter. Sure, you can't force her out of the chair, but if you give it to her straight, I believe that she'll understand. I don't know how your group works, but if she still doesn't move, get an instructor or leader involved. You have to do whatever it takes sometimes even if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Believe me, you don't want to pass up such an amazing opportunity and you cannot allow someone to get in the way. I hope you heed my advice. Good luck!
