Boyfriend offered me money for my time

I took my boyfriend (just!) out for a meal this evening to celebrate his birthday. He deliberately chose the most expensive things on the menu, knowing I was paying and I don't really have a lot of spare cash. The thing is, though, I wanted to pay for him as in the past he has said that he would like me to take him out for a meal now and again. So I had no problem with paying. I'd saved up for long enough anyway. At the end of the meal, I asked the waiter for the bill, and he told me it had been paid. When my partner came back from the loo, I asked him if he had paid for the meal, and he said yes. I asked him why because it was his birthday treat from me to him, and he said that because i am so busy charging other people for my time (I am a guitar tutor) that he wanted to pay for my time too, implying that I was a prostitute. Now I know he has used prostitutes on a regular basis in the past, but I think that saying that to me, of all people, was pretty nasty and offensive. Ok, there are you out there who will say that I am moaning for nothing, at least the bill was paid. But that is not the point. I do not want him trying to make me feel like I am somebody he can pay to be nice to - not that he was that good company tonight anyway. Somebody offer their opinion please? Am I right to be angry, or am I over-reacting?

i'm not sure if he was implying that you are a prostitute. have you talked to him about this? discussing things can help, you might have got the wrong end of the stick. however, I can understand why the commented offended you. if you do not like the person that he is, why are you with him?
