What does it exactly mean when a guy says 'now I feel bad' when breaking up?

Forgive me but I'm slightly confused over this issue. I've recently gone through a break up and my boyfriend said to me right before he broke up with me, 'now i feel bad'. Can anyone explain to on perhaps why this is? Thanks.

Probably cos he knows that you love him, so he is looking at the breakup from your side of things, and feels bad that you are going to be the one losing out most from the split, because you were presumably happy?
