Feeling angry with family

This year is my 40th birthday and I told my family that I would like to have a family holiday with my brother and sister and extended family. I raised this subject with my parents yesterday and was basically told that it isn't going to happen, to this end I feel very angry and upset that such a milestone birthday is going to go unmarked and basically uncelebrated. I bend over backwards for my family when they need help whether it be financial or help with child care with my niece and they can't even do this one thing for me. I have never asked for anything from them except this one thing and they can't even do that. Am I being totally unreasonable?

Hi,I'm new to this site and your post was one of the first I read. My thoughts about your situation were pretty instant. I can understand you wanting to celebrate your special birthday in a special way...but...your reaction to what your family have said is a bit surprising. Maybe they had something secretly planned, had you considered that? Or it's possible a holiday is something they can't afford. The way you were told bluntly "it isn't going to happen" makes me think something is being planned for your 40th. Just a suggestion but would it not be better to just sit tight and wait and see what could be in store. It might not be the holiday you wanted but personally I think whatever treat or surprise you do get will mean a whole lot more coming from your family's secret planning rather than them struggling to give you something you have asked for. Hope they are planning something nice!
