Sick right before vacation; what do I do?

MRPOTATOFACE - Jul 23 2025 at 22:27
A few months ago I asked off for, and got approved for, the next two weeks off of work.
This week (the week before my vacation), I got sick and had to miss Monday-Wednesday (today).
I’m still kind of a mess mentally, and am doing better physically but not 100%.
Would it look bad if I messaged my boss today and asked for tomorrow off (I don’t work Fridays), and then told her that I will work the second week of my vacation to make up for missing this week?
The other alternative is that I go in tomorrow and possibly Friday (to make up for this week’s absences), and then take my whole two weeks of vacation.
I’m kind of leaning towards the first option but am afraid it will look bad on my part.
I’ve already provided a doctors note for the absences through today.
Thanks in advance!
Hi MrPotatoFace (- hahaha - brilliant!!),
(Are you tasty, though? And do you have a thick skin?) (Eyes in the back of your head?) (Are you a chip off the old block?) (groan)

Then - No, it wouldn't. They know you're officially poorly. It'd impress your boss (your understanding of her own situation) as well as reassure her that you have a perfect-working conscience and very good work-ethic (being willing to make-up for or reverse the inconvenience).
It'd look good.
In fact, if I were still a boss today, I'd say: Wanna job?
(You're a GenZ, aren't you.)
PS: Getting ill right before a vacation is perfectly common. Happened to me a couple of times. I'd have made your "it's not my fault but I'll make it up to you anyway" statement. It's part of how I worked my way up to become a boss. :)
If you want to really show-off, there's also this one:
...Plus, this bug is just horrid so I'd rather NOT be responsible for spreading it around the whole office(!).
I know it's been a while since you posted this, Potato, but I'd say it's a reasonable request to ask for Thursday off and then work your second vacation week.
The main issue that could pop up is you might not be able to get those hours due to scheduling availability. Usually hours are distributed a few weeks in advance, so your boss simply may not have the hours to give for that week.
Still, it's worth asking. Your plan might be a good one.
Did it go okay, MrPotato?
