Girlfriend's friend buys her stuff

My girlfriend's mate buys her expensive gifts every day and it is starting to irritate me - she is in hospital and every single day he arrives with a ridiculously expensive present - so far he has given her a tv, laptop, jewellry, a radio, a mobile phone and when she gets out he is buying her a microwave. He has told her he will buy her something every day as he loves her. She says I should not worry as she has known him for years and he is a good friend, but it is anoying - I visited today and gave her a lovely book and she was very happy. After I left he turned up with a laptop and she has forgotten about my book :( I dont know what to do, other than just put up with it. If I mention it to the friend she will get angry for interfering. I am fed up with it but feel like im being a silly jealous man.

Hopefully your girlfriend will see through his antics. Maybe he is trying to buy her affection, but the amount of stuff he is buying her sounds ridiculous - is he a drug dealer or something? Maybe he has secretly wanted to be with her throughout this friendship, and now that she is getting close to someone else (you), he is worried that he has lost his opportunity with her, or maybe he is worried that you will try and put a stop to the friendship, and this is his way of trying to reinforce the existing relationship so that it may continue... I think I would ask a couple of subtle questions about why she thinks he might be buying all of these things for her, just to put your mind at rest if that is at all possible. Hope these feelings don't ruin your Christmas, and try not to damage your relationship by being overly suspicious because the side effects from these emotions could in fact draw you apart without you realising it.
